No, there is no mandatory or required course in British Columbia to become an LCT. However, a strong foundation of traffic control should be gained before performing the role. An LCT course will provide instruction on the role and its responsibilities and to prepare an LCT for lane closure work to keep everyone safe while approaching the work zone.
United Traffic recommends at least 6 months of traffic control experience in multiple scopes of work before taking the LCT course.
Forever! As an LCT course is not regulated by WorkSafeBC, there is no expiration date. Some companies may suggest repeating the course every three years, but this is not required.
